History

It began as a dream…

It began in the early 1950s, as a dream. A dream of a synagogue for Jews of Iraqi origin arriving in Los Angeles from India, Indonesia, Singapore and other countries where they were second or third generation immigrants from Iraq. They wanted to build a synagogue based on the traditions they grew up with. A Sephardic modern orthodox synagogue that follows Minhag Baghdad and the teachings of the Ben Ish Hai, (Rabbi Yosef Hayim of Baghdad).

This dream became a reality in 1959 when Kahal Joseph Congregation was founded.

We started in a store front on Fairfax, and as our community grew, we moved to Robertson Boulevard, and in 1977 to our current location in Westwood.

Through the years Kahal Joseph welcomed members from around the world and the United States.

Today Kahal Joseph is a vibrant synagogue serving over 300 families, with a most beautiful sanctuary, a well-respected Talmud Torah program (Sunday school), and a contemporary and elegant social hall.

Even as our membership continues to grow, the spirit which brought the dream of this Jewish community to fruition remains strong and vibrant.

We invite you to visit our synagogue and experience the warmth of our community.
